Few days in Stockholm, Sweden

Time for some days in Stockholm with my old friend Per. I´m actually going to work with him at Stockholm Beer & Whiskey and sell his cheese. He have desided that we are going to stay at Hotel J at Nacka Strand, and that is a great choice. Location is relaxing, fresh air and still close to town if we want to go there after the fair.

Before I meet up Per, I have done work to do in Stockholm town and therefore I need som lunch and time to visit Giro Pizzeria again. Here they serve authentic neapolitan pizza.

I order the classic, Margherita and as wine I choose one of my favorite producers from Toscana; Querciabella Mongrana. It´s an Maremma region wine with a blend of Sangiovese 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25% and Merlot 25%. It´s also 100% VEGAN and 100% Biodynamic. For dinner we went to Restaurant J, that is a part of Hotel J which they are a part of the Nobis Hospitality Group. At dinner I started with shrimp with mayonnaise, served with butterfried toast and bleak roe. Then for main course I had Swedish sirioin with veal gravy, onion butter, baked tomato, cabbage, parmesan cheese and french fries. As wine I choose Querciabella Chianti Classico 2014. Real classic Chianti Classico ith 100% Sangiovese and as well 100% VEGAN and 100% Biodynamic. 12 months in fine to extra fine-grained French oak barriques (225 l) and tonneau (500 l), of which 10% new.

Next day, some lunch before the fair opens and work and Restaurang J is on the way to the fair, we deside to have lunch there as well. I order Game beef patties with ligonberries, green-pepper sauce and potato puré with Swedish cheese. Once again as wine I choose Querciabella Chianti Classico 2014. During the fair we got some samples on some oysters and shrimp mix and to that Champagne Castelnau Réserve.

Day on town, Gothenburg – Sweden

Thursday and got feeling for a nice afternoon, that maybe can go into a late night. That what happen when I sat and had lunch at new Swedish Taste in the basement of NK shopping mall. Swedish Taste is a restaurant that have very high reputation when it comes to high quality on their food, so when they open up a new part of Swedish Taste in the basement of NK, I looked forward to try it and see if they could continue to keep the level. I ordered catch of the day, and that was not so fun fish dish. The wine selection was very poor. My grade of this Swedish Taste, I have to say under avarage.

At Jespers tonight there was going to be an Malvirà event, some of the range all by the glass to nice prices just for this event. Jespers in on the way home from NK, therefore it would be perfect to drop in for some great wines. Tonights wines was Barbera d´Alba San Michele 2016, Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 and Langhe Rosso San Guglielmo 2014 as reds. For the withe it was Langhe Bianco Sauvignon 2016. Good turn up and met new friends. But after a while, I got hungry again and therefore I ordered a small cheese, olive and ham platter with some chips and breads on the side together with dip. Worked very well with the wines.

When I was finished here, I did quick stop at Hotel Avalon Bar for one drink. Like always it tasted great. Then was time to go home, but I wanted to make one more stop before, and that stop was as my good friend Riccardo for some wine, bread, cheese and conversation with Riccardo. To my small platter, I drank a good wine; ELLENA Barbera d´Alba 2015. After this, my night was finish and back home to bed.

Bianchi Café & Cycles, Stockholm – Sweden

In Stockholm there is a café that have got the same name as the famous bicycles; Bianchi. What they have done is to combined a ristorante, café and cycle shop in one, 3 in 1. I like this concept, something new and different in Sweden anyway and maybe there is a point behind it? After have eaten a big dinner and enjoyed good wines, you look at the cycles and buy one so you can train the next day and loose all the extra you at the day before 🙂 🙂 The place is called Bianchi Café & Cycles and is just behind the big and famous shopping mall NK.

Grilled schnitzel of veal ( without breadcrumbs ) with capers, tomatoes, arugula, parmesan potatoes. I added fries as well, when you eat is better to eat :-). Wine was a Chianti Classico with 10 months in oak.

To sum up this late lunch/ early dinner at Bianchi Café & Cycles, I have to say that I need to go back and try more from their menu before I can say to much. So far they delivered what I expected for the price on the food and interoir says; simple and easy.

Copenhagen, Denmark

August is soon over and soon will the dark months come and make a little bit boring so sitt outside and enjoy good food and wines. Therefore I desided to make a quick visit to one of my favorite get away town for 2 days and one night and enjoy some good food and wines. The town I´m talking about is Copenhagen, capital of Denmark and one of the best towns in the world when it comes to restaurants and food, according to all studies that is made.

This time I arrived by train to Copenhagen Central Sation, and the sun was really shining at it´s best. The train takes about 3 hours from Gothenburg, so I as little hungry when I arrived, so my first mission was to find food and lucky me that Tivoli is just across the street from Copenhagen Central Station. Tivoli have open up Tivoli Food Hall and I haven´t tried that one before, so that will be perfect for a quick pre-lunch before check-in at my hotel.

Choose sushi for this pre-lunch and the Letz Sushi Tivoli. Nothing special, just a 8 pieces classic sushi plate and a glass of Grüner Veltliner from Gruber Röschitz sense that was the only one by the glass. Finish and had to my hotel, and this week was a really hard time for me to find a room and I need to stay in the centrum so I can walk around the many restaurants and winebars and enjoy the food and wine whitout take a taxi back to my hotel when I finish for the night. I find a room at WakeUp Copenhagen, this hotel chain is a part of ARP HANSEN HOTEL GROUP which I normal stay at when I´m in Copenhagen. When I stay at WakeUp hotel, I don´t my points at ARP HANSEN HOTEL GROUP which I think is a very big negative.

After check-in was it time for my real lunch and that I had at one of my favorite trattorias/winebars; Trattoria FIAT. This italian place is great, every time I´m in Copenhagen I have at least one glass of wine here. Simple pasta ragu and some glass of PRIA Barbera d´Alba. Wall to wall there is GEIST where famous headchef Bo Bech work, so whats better to stop by here for a glass of wine and look at all the people that walks/ runs to somewhere to be and the beautiful Hotel d´Angleterre. All this is located around Kongens Nytorv. After this glass I went down to the docks and took a seat on Naervaer Strangade for glass of wines. For my first time I drank a glass of Ultimate Provence Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018.

Time to hotel and change before dinner with my french friend. On the way back I visit one of my other favorite winebar in Copenhagen; Nebbiolo Winebar. Now I´m back on white wine and one of my favorite producers from Alto Adige/ Trentino is J. Hofstätter and Nebbiolo have some of theirs wines by the glass and this time I went with Gewürztraminer. Lovely wine and as always they give you small plate of olives, hams and cheeses.

Time for dinner at Fishmarket with my friend and we both like fish and seafood, so Fishmarket will be perfect. Theirs seafood platter is great, but this time we went with their dishes of the day. That was Hake with mushrooms as starter and grillet Mullet as main. Have to say that this was not good. Dry, very little taste and very small portions.

I can write so much about Copenhagen, and I will do that later and give tips on my favorite places to visit and maybe that can help you when you visit Copenhagen.

Mojo, Örebro – Sweden

Lawekagruppen is one of the biggest, if not the biggest restaurant group in Örebro area and they have invested a lot of money in their new project Mojo. It´s a hotel, big restaurant and during the rummer they have a very big outdoor seating. I have been to some of the others units in their group, but this visit was my first to Mojo and I ave heard a lot about them. Very nice interior, very good food and other positive things. The only negative thing I have heard was about their winelist.

I´m a small dish eater, sense I love to try as much as possible from the menu. After have looked at the menu, I desided to start with Fresh burrata, then some white fish roe tacos and short ribs tacos.

When the plate comes in with the burrata, it looks great and I just wanted to slice up my burrata and see the fresh sauce flow out on my plate over the tomatoes. Nothing happens. See the picture half burrata and you see what I got to see when I sliced it. I got chocked, so I asked the waiter about it and she told me that is how it should be. After talked to some more people there, they told me that it´s a fresh frozen burrata. Fresh froxen burrata???? What´s that? I can only say that this was amongs the biggest disappointment I have experienced the last couple of years on a restaurant.

When it comes to the whote fish roe tacos and short ribs tacos, I can say that here they delivered very good food. These I wanted to order more of.

Then about the wines? Yes, the things I have heard about the poor winelist, yes. That was really true. Once a again a restaurant that have invest so much money on the interior and kitchen, but totaly forgets to put in any time and interest on the winelist, so here I can only say that I was equal disappointment on this as I was on the fresh frozen burrata.

Padel Swedish Open in Båstad, Sweden

I´m a big padel fan and playing my self when I have the time, which is more then I have. But it´s so much fun to play padel. For the second year running, the WPT have come to Sweden and to the summer city; Båstad. Here in Båstad they arrange the Tennis WTA tourment every summer and every year it is voted as the best WTA tourment for this size, so it´s extreme fun that they have manage to get the Padel WPT to Båstad.

This wounderful city offers some great nightclubs such like Peppes Bodega and restaurants like SAND inside Hotel Skansen and some other very nice places. We stayed on night at a B&B, that was ok for the location, but the send night was a very nice hotel and that was Hotel Riviera Strand.

Hotel Skansen and their restaurant SAND is very close to the padel courses and therefore we had many meals at SAND and some of them stood out more then others, so here is some of them.

One of the lunches we had Shrimp sandwich. This is a very popular sandwich in Sweden and especially on the west coast, that is so close to the sea. Every restaurant and city have their own idea on how it should be made and I have tried many of them when I´m traveling around and this one was one of the top 5 I have had. Congrats to that.

The last night before going back to Sweden, we desided to add som extra glamour to our dinner, so we ordered their 3 course menu, and sorry but their starter was something that I didn´t want to take a picture on. But the main and dessert they really stepped up. As main course it was Tataki of veal with tomatoes and pecorino crème. That was really good. For dessert it was Ice cream with strawberry, vanilla and sable. Overall it´s a nice restaurant and I will eat there again and also with the view from the outdoors seating, you can´t say something bad 🙂 :-).

Looking forward to 2020 and next Padel WPT and new food and wines with my friends.

Hedlunds – Jespers – Avalon, Gothenburg, Sweden

Time to meet up some friends in town and have some food, wine and cocktails. Long time ago sense we last saw each other, so what´s better then to catch up and walk around between few restaurants/ bars and enjoy good food, wines and cocktails? Desided to start at one of the best fish restaurants in Gothenburg; Hedlunds Havsbar. From the beginning this was a fish store and have been that for many years, but for two years ago they started also to serve food and beverages. Now it´s both a restaurant and shop. I choose the classic shrimp sandwich and to that I drank Weinrieder Grüner Veltliner Klassisk. Light, fresh and fruity Grüner Veltliner and VEGAN friendly wine.

After this wounderfull start we crossed the street and sat down at our good friend at Jespers. Here it´s very easy to stay for a long time, and you don´t notice that the time have flown so quick. I started with their famous whitefish roe with red onion and creme fraiche in a cone. I can only say WOW. To this I drank my favorite champagne ( when it comes to value for money this champagne have no competition at all ); Jean Dumangin Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Terroir. Perfect start before next dish, and here I choose to go with their tartar on swedish inner thigh, pickled silver onion, soy pickled shiitake mushroom, chili mayo and roasted onion. With this I drank my favorite Barbera from Piemonte; Malvira Barbera d´Alba San Michele 2016.

To finish of this teriffic day/ night, we crossed the street to our favorite cocktailbar; Avalon. Today I desided to have the classisc italian liqueur Strega as base on my drink, and the delivered as usual.

After this, it was time to go home and get some slepp and rest before the game of padel on sunday afternoon.

G.D. Vajra & Riccardo Cibo e Vino, Gothenburg, Sweden

Today I was invited to a winetasting with producer G.D. Vajra from Piemonte, Italy. This event took place at Hotel Bellora in Gothenburg. Piemonte is a region that produce really wounderfull wines and I have the last couple of years started to appreciate wines from this region, so I really looked forward to have a chance to taste a wide range of wines from G.D. Vajra. As classic for Italian, what is better to have to some great wines, then some cheese, olives and hams?!

The wines I tasted was there; Langhe Riesling as a white. Then the reds; Barbera d´Alba Superiore, JC Claré Langhe Nebbiolo and finaly Barolo Albe.

After this tasting I went to my friend and his trattoria, Riccardo Cibo e Vino and had some nice food and good wines. Started with home made pasta with salsiccia and parmigiano cheese. Great as always. Then I finish with some classic dessert as chocolate and vanilla home made gelato with chocolate sauce.

Steampunk Bar, Gothenburg, Sweden

Steampunk Bar in Gothenburg is the first and only bar with theme of Steampunk , and they have done a very, very great work to get this theme. I think is the only in Sweden, I haven´t seen anything like it in Sweden yet…, but I haven´t been in every city in Sweden and not visit every bar in the cities I have visit. Anyway, I´m very impressed of this one and they focs on drinks and beers. When it comes to drinks, their focus is on GIN. I think they have the second or third widest sortiment of gins in Sweden what I know. The other bars they compete against is Tapasbar La Uva and Paddy´s Vin & Ginbar.

I started with a Gin & Tonic ( of course ) and that as made with Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla. I´m not a big fan of Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla, I don´t think it have a nice sevilla orange taste. It´s to artificiell in the taste for me. Strong brand, but there is so many others less known brands that deliver much more taste of the real thing.

As starter I choose the Nautilus Tartar with salmon with asian touch. To be honest, the tomatoes have no place on this plate. As main course I choose The Hunters Lamb; Pink fried lamb fillet is served with thyme fried potatoes, red wine sauce, zuccini and cocktail tomatoes. The plating was not good looking, but the taste of the dish was great I have t say. Even here, I didn´t know what the tomatoes did on the plate. They love tomatoes here at Steampunk Bar. I finish with a dessert that was very nice. I love ice cream, whipped cream, straw-, rasp- and wild strawberries so a dessert with this combo can not go wrong for me. They have also add some white chocolate to this dessert, so I´m very happy with the final end of this dinner.

On the way home, I stoped by Avalon Hotel´s bar and had a quick small dish for the road 🙂 and a drink.

Salmon tartar with horseradish, chili, mayo and rice crisps, after that I had a classic Bloody Mary.

Magic Flamingo, Gothenburg – Sweden

Thursday and sun is high on the sky and summer is to start and more and more people is thinking of drinking rosé in the sun and eating lighter food and have a great summer. We meet up at Barabicu for a quick drink before we are having dinner at Magic Flamingo. New place and serves small dishes so you can eat many different and just add one more until you had enought.

It´s a large menu, but some dishes stands out and these are what we start with. Number 1 is Scallops ceviche with mango, avocado, pomegranate and coriander. Fresh and light, but still food so you feel that you get something in your stomach. Perfect summer dish I have to say. Then the dishes comes in on a regular basis; Steak tartare which is hand-cut top side from local farm – Dalsjöfors – with blackened pickled silverskin onion, roasted sunflower seeds, baked egg yolk, machego cheese and truffle mayo.

Continues with prawn taco – vannamei shrimp – with amarillo mayo, pickled red cabbage, pico de gallo, pineapple, roasted coconut, gem salad and coriander. Next up was Pulled brisket taco – brisket from Dalsjöfors – amarillo mayo, pickled red cabbage, pico de gallo, gem salad and coriander. To finish this great night with food and wine, it was time for dessert and my choice was Magic Flamingos churros with dulce de leche, nutella, vanilla ice cream and banana chips. This was a amazing dessert.

Some of the dishes we ordered more then once, including the churros :-). The only negative thing about this place is the wines. The winelist is something they really need to work on. We tasted some wines, but mostly we drank SANDER Riesling from Germany during the whole dinner…..
